Baldwin Restoration Project- 1926 Baldwin Model H 5' 8" Grand Piano
Started 17 March, 2010

Page3

We just removed the bass stringsand now we are going to remove the rest of the bass strings in the beginning of the tenor section. There are 8 double bass unisons here.

Note, one of the strings is missing.

All the bass strings are off now, the ones that were in the tenor section were taken off and put on the wire with the rest of the bass strings. Now they are ready to be sent off for reproduction.

One thing we want to check for is "tied" strings. We have 1 tie on this piano. Mostly, tenor/treble strings are shared. That is, they go over a hitch pin and are in the same unison (3 strings) or are part of the next higher or lower unison (one-half step in pitch higher or lower).

Note the missing string, far left, this is a "tie" since it does not loop.
Good picture of the aliquots.

Time for the rest of the strings to be taken off. I'll loosen each of them a full turn at a time first going across the line of pins closest to the agraffe's, then dropping to the very furthest from the agraffes. They get spaced out so we don't loose tension too fast in one section of the plate (the only exception being the bass section).

We always mic the strings before cutting them. I do this as habit even though the scale of the strings is clearly marked on this piano and is cast into the plate.

All strings loosened and tenor/treble strings measured with a micrometer.

This Scale letter on a Baldwin plate leaves nothing to guess as far as the Scale was intended by the piano's designer. This means the E Scale is made for 5' 8" Baldwin Grand pianos, whether it is a Model H like this one, or the more recent Model R.

We have our bass strings off and ready for shipping. We have determined our scale and we're ready to take off the tenor/treble strings.
